About This Episode
A Move to Boyle That Sparked a Lifelong Connection
Melissa Doohan Beirne joined the podcast as the first female guest, reflecting on her journey from London to Boyle at the age of eight. Her family moved to Churchview in Boyle in 1997 after her parents sought to return to Ireland to raise their children. Though she still refers to herself as a “blow-in,” Melissa has clearly become deeply embedded in the community, building strong friendships and lasting memories over the past 25 years.

Melissa during the Antrim Coast Marathon
From Personal Loss to Purpose: A Running Journey
Melissa opened up about the hardships she experienced around 2013 and how walking became a way to cope. Over time, that walking led to running. It started small…running from one electricity pole to the next along the roads of Mockmoyne. Eventually, she completed her first uninterrupted 5K during a visit to the UK. This became a turning point, setting her on a path of long-distance running and community involvement.

Lough Key Parkrun
Lough Key Parkrun: A Family Affair
Her running journey expanded when she discovered the Parkrun community. After joining events in Sligo, she was thrilled to learn that Parkrun was coming to Boyle in 2016. Patricia Kelly McGarry was instrumental in setting up Lough Key Parkrun, and soon Melissa and her family were all involved—running, volunteering, or both. It became a cornerstone of her weekly routine and created a new social outlet for many people locally.

Boyle Athletic Club
Founding Boyle Athletic Club
Melissa also played a key role in the foundation of Boyle Athletic Club. Sparked by Sunday morning runs with Helen Byrne, and seeing the interest generated by Parkrun, the idea of a local athletic club took shape. With support from Athletics Ireland and other community members, the club was formed and has grown steadily ever since.

Darkness Into Light Boyle 2022
Darkness Into Light: Community and Compassion
A significant part of the episode focused on Melissa’s involvement in Darkness Into Light, the annual walk and fundraiser for Pieta House. She joined the founding Boyle committee in 2017. The Boyle event has grown impressively, raising over €52,000 to date.
Melissa described the powerful atmosphere of the walk…candles lighting the route at 4 a.m., the quiet support of neighbours, and the deeply emotional shared experience. The event has become a symbol of hope and community unity in Boyle, and continues to touch lives year after year.
Melissa’s story is one of resilience, motivation, and community spirit. From personal challenges to marathon milestones, she has used running not just as a physical outlet but as a way to build support networks and inspire others around her.

Many thanks to Melissa and to Florence. Everything touched upon in the podcast was very informative for me, a Yank from across the pond. You all are giving me a great education about, not only Boyle, but about Ireland. And it is much appreciated! Cheers! –Matt
