Voices of Boyle

A podcast featuring real stories from the people of Boyle, County Roscommon.

Voices of Boyle is one long conversation with our town.

Since 2022 we’ve sat down with nearly 100 people: people who grew up here and have lived here all their lives, people who moved here from other towns and countries, people who live abroad but have a link to Boyle, and people who call Boyle home but moved away to start a new life.

Some episodes are a trip down memory lane. Some are a life story told for the first time. Others are a history lesson about our town and its people. But most are just a good chat with some laughs and memories thrown in.

Whether you’re living in Boyle or you live three thousand miles from it, we invite you to make a cuppa and enjoy listening to some familiar voices.

MEET THE HOSTS

carlo and florence

Hi, we’re Carlo and Florence, and we were both born and reared (as they say!) in Boyle.

We’ve spent the last thirteen years living and travelling abroad, but Boyle is home and the place we always come back to.

Like a lot of people who travel, distance changed how we viewed our hometown. The characters we’d walked past for years. The teachers who taught us at school. The shops we bought sweets in before going to the Pleasure Grounds. The people we’d heard about growing up. The stories nobody had ever written down.

It all became really valuable.

We talked about starting a local podcast for a long time before we finally did it in 2022, with no experience of recording audio or interviewing anyone. We’re home a few times each year, and we record in batches while we’re there, sometimes talking to several people in a week.

What started as a bit of a chat has turned into something we take more seriously and something we’d love to continue doing. Every generation before ours lost most of what it knew. We now have the technology to do better than that, and our goal with this podcast is to create an audio archive for whoever comes next.

BE A GUEST ON THE SHOW!

If you’ve a story about Boyle, we’d love to hear it. You don’t need to have done anything remarkable, and you don’t need to prepare a thing. We sit down, have a chat, and you talk about whatever you want to. It usually takes about an hour.

Thinking of someone else? A parent, a grandparent, a neighbour who remembers how it used to be? Tell us about them. Some of our best episodes started because a son or daughter got in touch. You can find us at [email protected].
